Street Hunt 3

Dear Street Hunters Readers,

This time, the Street Hunt video has been shot during the night! I use my Sony NEX-6 at various ISO settings, depending on the available ambient light and I take a walk around the Old Town of Rethymno capturing night photos. I use a fast lens mostly wide open at f1.8. The lens is a 35mm, equivalent to 50mm full frame.

During this Street Hunt I talk about some of the Night Photography tips mentioned in our previous post How to shoot Night Street Photography! Gear, Techniques and Tips discuss ways to hide in the shadows and more.

As far as the video quality is concerned, I feel that the little Sony Action cam did quite a good job recording in low light. I do visit some really dark places where there is very little light, but even so there is enough visibility that I think doesn’t ruin the Street Night Photography experience of the video.

That’s all for now, please check out the video and let me know what you think of this 2nd attempt!

Stay sharp & keep shooting!

Introduction

Our busy lives eat up much of our precious time. Our jobs, families, school, homes and so on are hungry for our precious minutes. Carving out chunks of time for our passion, Street Photography, is necessary. For me, and I’m sure this holds true for almost every one of you, this has to be done. It gives us balance in our lives. It rejuvenates us, just like any other hobby or recreational activity would. For some, it’s what keeps us from becoming drones. From being mindless zombies that are slaves to the grind. I can definitely testify to that.

If you’re like me, the only available time to get lost in shooting is on the weekends. That’s especially true during this time of year here in the Northeast United States Of America. The days are terribly short and the nights tend to be too cold. That being said, by the time a weekend is over, I’m already planning for the next weekend. I start thinking of a plan of attack before Monday even hits. A Street Hunt (a.k.a. Street Photowalk), for me, is rarely just a grab and go venture. I usually know in advance when I’ll be able to steal a few hours to go shoot and I can plan accordingly. So, let me share how I prepare for a Street Hunt.

Introduction

Dear Readers,

This is the second Street Hunt video posted by Street Hunters! In this video, I will visit another part of Rethymno in Crete and use a Wide Angle prime pancake lens to capture moments with a more dramatic effect.

In contradiction to video quality in the Street Hunt No1, the video quality this time is much better. I am now using an action camera that has optical steadyshot technology, producing a less shaky result. Of course the viewing angle is much wider, that is in part how steadyshot is achieved, but I think that the outcome is much more acceptable.

The video is all about the choices that a Street Photographer must make. I analyse most if not every decision I take and I try to explain why I choose to take a photograph. Sometimes the explanation makes sense and others not, please forgive me, but Street Hunters do work on instinct most of the time, since they have to “play” an unpredictable game with an unknown outcome.

That’s all for now, please check out the video and let me know what you think of this 2nd attempt!

Introduction

Street Photography can be a confrontational art. Not the finished product, but the creation itself. The act of snapping that candid moment can be an offensive action to the subject. When you think about it, there’s times where you wouldn’t want to be photographed! You’re not looking or feeling your best, lost in your own world, walking or just standing around. Then, you catch someone taking a candid snap of you. Depending on your mood, your disposition, you may react. Your reaction might be a simple “hey” or “what are you doing?” Another person might be more aggressive. It can become quite the sticky situation.

Doing what we do, this is bound to happen. Fortunately, this has only happened to me a few times. So what’s the best way to get out of an awkward moment when out on the street? I can only answer that question based on my personal experience, so first I have to explain my style when working on the street.

NOTE: This is a subject that I feel I don’t have the really professional technical knowledge for, so everything I write in this post is from personal experience. If something is inaccurate, please correct me! You are most welcome to do so!

Introduction

A Street Photographer has many camera lens options for when shooting. A Street Photographer can use a camera equipped with a zoom lens, or a prime lens. Zoom lenses provide Street Hunters with focal length flexibility but are usually bigger and not as sharp or as fast as prime lenses. So, naturally primes are widely used in Street Photography, without that being the rule of course. When someone uses primes they automatically have a lighter and smaller kit to carry around, compared to another Photographer who uses a big zoom lens which gives them some advantages in movement and stealth.

There are many different types of Prime lenses. There are ultra wide lenses, wide lenses, normal lenses, classic portrait lenses, telephoto lenses and ultra telephoto lenses.  Today, we will talk about the wide angle lenses and discuss their pros and cons in Street Photography.

Is there an easy way to better street photography? Is there a system to help me improve my eye? YES!! Although I usually condone “Keep Calm and do this and that” lists, having seen the results of these few steps in action I believe that if you, yes you! take the time over the next twelve months and follow the steps below, your street photography will develop in leaps and bounds. It will take focus, dedication and without a doubt shooting every day. If you’re committed to that; continue reading, if not ; sell your camera.

Introduction

Dear Readers,

This time around instead of writing a blog post about Street Photography, I will show you a video that I recorded. This video is the first official Street Hunters “Street Hunt”! In other words it is just me walking around, talking a lot and shooting photos!

As you will see in the first minute of the video, I have purchased a small Hot Shoe to Tripod adapter or accessory. So, using that thing I have managed to connect my old beat up Flip Camera to the hot shoe of my NEX-6. That way anything my camera sees, the Flip Cam sees and records while I am on the move.

Watching this video you will get a hands on Street Hunt experience as seen through my eyes and processed through my senses. You will see what I decide to photograph, listen for what reasons I take my photos and how my images finally turn up. The photos that have been made during this Street Photography walk are not all high quality photos that I would easily share in Social Media, but they are part of the experience of this Street Hunt so I am sharing them happily with you. Some of these photos, at least two that I can think of, will be shared as photos in future posts of mine for Street Hunters.

Introduction

In the last year I have found myself wanting to learn more and more about photography. Books are always a great resource, as are also YouTube videos and blogs. But, I found that I needed something that would give me a ton of objective knowledge in a short amount of time. So, I thought that I should check and see what documentaries I could find online or on DVD that I could watch. Documentaries are always a rich and most of the times objective source of knowledge. So I did some digging and I found many resources that suggested various photography documentaries. I read some online reviews to help me make a short list of the utmost best choices and then I proceeded with watching them, one by one. Today, I am going to share this list with you, because I believe that every Street Photographer should watch these films and enrich their historical and practical knowledge of photography.

What binds my choice of the ‘Famous Five’?

Through all these works and images that follow, I feel these 5 photographers smash preconceptions of photography, they work tirelessly every day, they see nothing but the exuberance of life , they don’t give a flying jiggery pokery about camera gear and without fail they make me smile…..thanks guys

p.s. In writing this I’ve realised my famous five doesn’t contain a female street photographer whom tickles me in the same way the chaps do…..do you have any suggestions?

Introduction

Ever since I started shooting in the Streets, I have been hooked to it. I love the way that sometimes scenes just unfold themselves right in front of my lens and I feel so lucky that I am there to press the shutter button to capture them.

I have noticed that after shooting in the same town or city for a long period of time, I begin to get it’s vibe and I start to comprehend it better and better. When shooting in a small town, this comprehension might come to me faster, depending of course on the complexity of the people and the architecture in the area. I must admit thought, that after shooting in the same streets for many weeks or even months, a time comes when I feel that I have nothing more to capture. I feel that I have explored every corner, that I know every way the light shines in each street and sometimes I even know which people to expect during specific times of the day. When this happens to me, there is always one thing that I do that excites me and makes me feel a new interest for my town.  I go nocturnal.
