Introduction

Dear Streethunters.net Readers,

I know how overwhelming it can be for you, the beginner street photographer, to look through all the options street photography has to offer, organise the information, choose what is best for you and select your path. I know this first hand. It took me many years to finally find myself as a street photographer.

Through this course, I want to share with you what I have learned through the years, help guide you on your path and try to inspire you to see street photography from a different perspective. I will teach you composition techniques, lighting techniques, some basic theory about the masters of photography that have set the foundation for modern street shooting and many other things which you will find listed below in the course notes. However my most important goal will be to teach you to be yourself and how not to be afraid to express your emotions through your photography.

Announcing Christmas Flash Street Photography Workshop in Athens, Greece!

Introduction

Dear Streethunters.net Readers,

As I have mentioned many times before, Flash Street Photography excites me very much. I think that it bring my street photography to another level and I think it can do the same for you. For that reason I want to share my excitement about Flash Street Photography with you by teaching you about this style of shooting at my Flash Street Photography Workshops in Athens.

It has now been nearly 4 years since I started shooting Flash Street Photography and to my surprise I have found out that most people don’t really care about the flash in the streets. You are welcome to ask my 44 students so far about this. People really don’t mind that much been flashed. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, but mostly just don’t mind! I think the reason for this is the upfront style of a flash shot that makes it a more sincere style of shooting than let’s say when one is lurking in the shadows capturing sly shots and I think that is how people see it. What I mean is that there is nothing sneaky about a flash shot. It is brutally honest. There is no doubt about what the street photographer is doing. This gives me even more incentive to keep on shooting Flash Street Photography and now I feel that I know more than enough to share my experiences with you in a very easy to digest way. So read along, let me explain what this workshop is going to be all about!

PhoS Athens Street Photography Festival

A few months ago, we here at Street Hunters were pleased to announce that we would be participating in PhoS in Athens, the first and only free street photography colloquium in Greece, made by you for you, talented street photographers! Now, the official program has been announced!

PhoS is going down in Athens from November 10th through the 12th, and there is a lot of action packed between those dates. That action will consist of workshops, talks, portfolio reviews, walks, contests, exhibitions and more! Better yet, the events are free of charge! That’s a pretty sweet deal for a festival that will feature the best from both Greek and international street photography, all over the course of one weekend!

Brussels Street Photography Festival Logo

The second edition of the Brussels Street Photography Festival (BSPF) is opening this Friday, launching a weekend full of street photography goodness including photo contests, workshops, exhibitions, lectures, photo walks, photo feedbacks and more!

The BSPF describes itself as a cultural project whose objective is to promote street photography as an urban research tool, a form of cultural communication and a visual art. Inspired by Brussels’ urban landscape, the festival’s main ambition is to provide an international platform that looks at Brussels through the fresh eyes of its citizens and engaged photographers.

One of Time Magazine’s Unsung American Female Photographers of the Past Century, who was known for documenting the heart, heat and abandon of the wild 1970’s and 80’s disco and punk scenes, is back with a new exhibition! However, this time, Meryl Meisler has turned her lens on a different circus.

Sassy Circus & Creepy Clowns features Meisler’s images from the Finale Day of The Greatest Show on Earth, along with her interpretations of The 45th Administration. The Greatest Show on Earth refers to The Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which just ended it’s run of 146 years, and Meisler was at one of the finale performances to capture it. The circus ended its run due to declining ticket sales. The decline was attributed to the circus no longer using live elephants in its performances after scrutiny from animal rights groups and corresponding local ordinances.

Paul Kessel's The Last Stop At Umbrella Arts Gallery

Umbrella Arts Gallery in New York City’s East Village is about to unveil it’s second solo exhibition with Paul Kessel, who was named one of Lens Culture’s Top 100 Street Photographers 2016!

The Last Stop: Photographs of Coney Island, is the latest exhibition from Kessel, who’s True Believer series was featured in Popular Photography’s June 2016 issue. The exhibition is curated by Harvey Stein, Director of Photography at Umbrella Arts Gallery, award winning photographer and instructor at the International Center of Photography. Stein selected over 24 images for the exhibition covering several years of Kessel roving the storied boardwalk of Coney Island.

Streethunters.net summer break 2017

As we roll into August, the temperatures are rising and so is the amount of work we have here at Streethunters HQ! So… Spyros, Digby and myself are going to take two weeks off to recharge, re-organize and ready ourselves for the coming months. Before the engine overheats, we figure it’s best to let it cool down, change the oil, give it a flush and rotate the tires. Beginning Tuesday, August 15th, www.streethunters.net is taking a little online break!

ex-Artis 'Home' photography project

Earlier this year, Paphos again made its mark in the photography world with its Months Of Photography Paphos programs. Now, Paphos will once more be the site of yet another great photo program which will result in a catalog and an exhibition in Pafos in December 2017.

‘HOME’ is an ongoing photographic project organized by the ex-Artis Cultural Association in Cyprus and is based on the collaboration of photographers from different cultural orientations under the guidance of talented specialists of photography. The project started on the 27th of June 2017 in Drousia, a village in the Pafos district in Cyprus, as a residence and workshop for 5 days. Twelve photographers had the opportunity to learn from two experts of photography: Jason Eskenazi (USA) and Achilles Nasios (Sweden) who introduced them into a dialogue and a process of self-awareness, linked to their cultural expertise, to re-define the idea of ‘home’. Photographers from Pafos, Limasol, Nicosia, Bucharest, Patra and Thessaloniki are participating in this project. They are members of three photography collectives: BULBphotos, CPS-Pafos Branch and Fotodos. The project is funded by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus.
