Jon Luvellis work in exhibition at the State Historical Society of Missouri permanent art collection

Jon Luvelli is an acclaimed street photographer that is based in Missouri a state in the Midwestern United States. If you are a regular reader of the Streethunters.net website you will remember Luvelli’s work from some of our previous posts.

In 2015 we wrote a feature on his photo “Horns”, in 2016 we wrote a review about his book “One Block” and in that same year he was voted as one of the most influential street photographers of that year by you, our readers.

Today we would like to share with you some exciting news about him. The State Historical Society of Missouri, recognising Luvelli’s fine art photography and his contribution to the portrayal of Midwestern rural townscapes, will be sharing a selection of his work in their permanent art collection. The first installment of photographs is on display now at the State Historical Society’s Columbia art gallery.

A Crowdsourced List Of Street Photographers

Two weeks ago we asked for your help to find the 20 most influential contemporary Street Photographers and the feedback we received was just fantastic. We are very grateful for your participation. You recommended many Street Photographers out of which a list of 115 names was finally made. Thank you!

It is understandable that each one of you is influenced by different Street Photographers for different reasons and that is what makes this vote even more interesting. Influences play an important role in the way an artist perceives the world and his/her art, so it is only logical that each one of us has different sources of inspiration, making our perception of what we consider “an influence” unique. What is important is that you all helped us with your vote to find who are the 20 most influential Street Photographers at this time according to you.

One of the Street Photographers on this list, Thomas Leuthard, explained this nicely in his post when he shared the link to the poll on his facebook page. He said:

“Make your personal suggestion, who is the most influential street photographer for you. Not the best, not the most famous, not the coolest, the one who influences you…”

Introduction

Columbia, Missouri doesn’t come to mind as a street photography mecca. When we think of famous locales for street photography, we think of Havana, London, New York City, Paris, Tokyo and the like. But the truth is, great street photographs can be made almost anywhere. It’s up to the photographer and their ability to see. Their vision. And, of course, their ability to make the image. One has to look no further than the legendary Mark Cohen and his work in Scranton, Pennsylvania, with a population of just over 40,000.

Columbia, on the other hand, boasts a population of just over 100,000. Does that equate to more opportunities, more subject matter, for a street photographer? Perhaps. But if you narrow your shooting area to just one block, it should be a veritable “hot zone” for street. Familiarity with the turf won’t do. Intimacy is required.

Introduction

A few months ago we had selected to feature a photograph by USA based Street Photographer Jon Luvelli called “Horns“. The photo had inspired us so much that we analysed it quite extensively. Luvelli sees the beauty in the mundane. He has perfected his skill to bring the emotion and charm out of subjects that would otherwise remain unappreciated. Luvelli is a long time reader of www.streethunters.net and for this reason the following announcement is extra interesting for us.
