Flash Street Photography

Winner of the December 2018 theme contest

Introduction

Dear Streethunters.net Readers,

December 2018 is over. It is time to announce the winner of the December 2018 Street Photography Contest!

The theme of the contest was “Flash Street Photography” and we had asked you all to send in photos with examples of street photos shot with a flash. You responded by sending in a whole bunch of photos! Thank you all for submitting your work!

As per the rules of the contest, Street Hunters Andrew Sweigart, Digby Fullam, John Hughes and myself, chose one photo each. The next step was to select the very best one of the four and present it here to you.

So, the lucky winner of the December 2018 Street Photography Contest is Ayanava Sil and this is his photograph.

December 2018 monthly theme contest

Dear Streethunters.net Readers,

The twelfth and last Monthly Theme Contest photos for 2018 have been submitted and we have made our choices. Please keep in mind that the process of choosing a photo from the December 2018 Street Photography Contest Submissions was not easy!

But let’s take a look at all the photos that were submitted and accepted in this Monthly Theme Contest.

ATTENTION: The photos that didn’t meet the Theme or the Editors criteria were not chosen to be in the shortlist. They have been disqualified or removed. If your pic isn’t in the shortlist, don’t get discouraged. Try again in one of the next Street Photography contests!

At this moment I would like to thank each and every participant for submitting their“Flash Street Photography” photograph. We have a collection 20 valid submissions which can all be seen below.

Flash Street Photography Contest

Hello Streethunters.net Readers!

A few words about the Monthly Theme Contests

It is time for the Monthly Theme Contest for December 2018! The Monthly Theme Contests are a fun challenge for all! Every month we choose a Theme and we ask you to participate by each sending us one Street Photograph each time at streethunters.net@gmail.com. That photos must be based on the Monthly Theme. So for example if the theme is Silhouettes, then we would like you to each send a photo with a Silhouette moment. Your photo can be taken any time in history, we don’t mind, as long as it has been taken by you and nobody else.

What Is This Month’s Theme?

2018 is going to go our with a FLASH! So this month we would like to ask you to participate with Street Photos of “Flash Street Photography”. We would like you to send in street photos shot with a flash. Dig up your best shots or go and hunt for some news ones! Please send in clever photos . We look forward to seeing what you will send in!

Please follow the example of the photo we are sharing with you here.

Guide to Flash Street Photography On Camera cover

Introduction to Flash Street Photography

You will probably have guessed by now that we here at Streethunters.net are big fans of flash street photography. We’ve recorded no less than three Street Hunts dedicated to off-camera flash street photography in Rethymno, Crete, Greece, as well as producing a guide to flash street photography during the day as part of our street talk video series. Spyros Papaspyropoulos regularly runs hands-on flash street photography workshops for intermediate and entry level photographers in Athens, with places still available for the December workshop! Flash street photography was the theme for our March 2017 monthly theme contest too (won by Christoph Wuzella), plus we’ve made an awesome list of top flash street photographers for you to follow on social media. In amongst all this we’ve put together two guides on using off-camera flash in street photography and an explainer for how to rock an off-camera flash setup with the Fujifilm X-Pro1. But we realised that despite all our flash street photography love we’ve never actually put together a basic primer on shooting with a flash the way the majority of you will like to shoot – i.e. on the camera itself. So, we’re now going to rectify that with a simple little guide to flash street photography (on camera).

Michelle Groskopf 'Sentimental' Kickstarter cover

One of the best flash street photographers working is on the verge of publishing their first monograph, and you have a few days left to be one of their backers on Kickstarter!

Michelle Groskopf, a member of the great Full Frontal Flash collective, is primed to release ‘Sentimental’, a collection of street photography from the past 5 years that is to be published by The Magenta Foundation. There’s less than a week left to raise about $3000 USD of the $20,000 goal. Michelle is a friend and we here at Street Hunters support this book, and if you’re a fan, you should consider it too. But the clock is ticking…  this project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Saturday, December 2, 2017.

Introduction

Flash Street Photography is a sub genre of Street Photography that is basically shooting photos in the streets using a flash for additional light. The flash can be used for dramatic effect, for filling in shadowy areas or in other creative ways and the results of this practice are usually unusual and impressive.

In the past we have featured various Flash Street Photographers in our Featured Street Photo and Under The Influence series, however we have never compiled a list of Flash Street Photographers for you to go through in one go. Today we are doing just that and we will be sharing with you links towards their websites and social profiles so you can always stay up to date with the excellent work that they produce.

Before we dive into the list of talented Flash Street Photographers we would like to remind you of our very own Flash Street Photography workshops that take place in Athens. The next workshop is on the 29th of April 2017. We will be having more Flash Street Photography workshops in the near future. If you are interested in joining us in the 3rd Annual Street Hunters Meeting in London this August, we will be teaching a Flash Street Photography workshop there too. Make sure to stay tuned and check out our Workshops sections every so often.

Hello Streethunters.net Readers!

As mentioned in previous post “Revealing the Monthly Theme Contest New Rules & Prizes for 2017“, this year we have made some changes to the Monthly Theme Contests. The new rules are also included in this post and will be included in each contest post from now on. For your convenience, here are the changes:

What’s changed and what hasn’t in a nutshell

  1. The calendar at the end of the year is being canceled.
  2. The way we select photos remains the same.
  3. The monthly themes are much harder. You will need to work hard.
  4. The prizes the winners receive have changed. Read more below.
