September 2017 Monthly Theme Contest Submissions

September Nominees for the colour pink

Dear Streethunters.net Readers,

The ninth Monthly Theme Contest photos for 2017 have been submitted and we have made our choices. Please keep in mind that the process of choosing a photo from the September 2017 Street Photography Contest Submissions was quite hard!

But let’s take a look at all the photos that were submitted and accepted in this Monthly Theme Contest.

ATTENTION: This time round we had a lot of submissions again! Many good photos had to stay out because we like keeping our list short at around 30 images. So photos that didn’t meet the Theme or the Editors criteria were not chosen to be in the shortlist. They have been disqualified or removed. If your pic isn’t in the shortlist, don’t get discouraged. Try again next month!

At this moment I would like to thank each and every participant for submitting their photograph. We have a great collection of photos with “The Colour Pink” to show you! This time we had 30 valid submissions which can all be seen below.

Here are our favourite 30 photos that made it through our strict Editors criteria!

*All images that were not sent in at the correct size, have been resized. This might affect the quality of entries that were sent in very small sizes.

The September 2017 Street Photography Contest editors picks

Every month each one of us Streethunters.net editors picks one photo as a nominee. Here are the photos we chose and the reasons why:

Nominee No1

Analysis by Andrew Sweigart, Streethunters.net editor

“With these colour themes, I’ve decided I like the submissions to do one of two things: use the theme colour cleverly, or smash me in the face with an explosion of the colour. With this submission, I get both and that seals the deal. Pink dominates this image… the main subject’s pink shirt, pink and white scarf, and, of course, the massive pink dry-colour cloud. The scene almost looks like it could be from Rangwali Holi, the festival of colours celebrated in India and Nepal. But, the best part is the surrealistic bent with the impression of the character’s head exploding into a cloud of pink! I also like that he has his index finger pointing up, as if he won something or achieved his goal of making his head erupt into a billow of pink!”

Nominee No2

Analysis by Digby Fullam, Streethunters.net editor

This street photo is all about the colours, from the flashes of pink across all elements of the frame (top left, bottom left, and far right) to the powerful expanse of white negative space and the slab light blue on the doors. These colours all fit together wonderfully, and the blue and pink particularly form a harmonious combination (as these hues are close together on the colour wheel), all of which gives a nice aesthetic balance to the image. But to focus on just the colours would be to do this street photo a disservice. The composition is excellent too – notice for instance how the pink chair stands out from the white of the lower wall, and perfectly mirrors the position of the little girl (the focal point) on the far right third of the frame. This is one of those photos that is filled with so much detail and is so meticulously arranged that you have the upmost respect for the photographer in finding the scene and then having the presence of mind to arrange and capture a shot like this. Superb work!

Nominee No3

Analysis by Spyros Papaspyropoulos, Streethunters.net editor

“Readers that have been following Streethunters.net for a long time and have read my previous comments regarding selections of images in these Theme Contests and also me Featured Street Photo series, know that I am a sucker for the weird and surreal, the different, the uncanny. This image uses the colour pink in a way that hits the sweet spot between the requirements of the contest and the things I look for in a photograph. The first time I saw this shot was a while back when Digby Fullam had selected it as a feature photo for our Facebook group. It had struck me then and by seeing it again it brought back all those feelings. It kind of reminds me of a scene from a mysterious movie. Love the lines and love the way the photographer has made excellent use of an analogous colour palette. Analogous colours are colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel. We usually find such colour combinations in nature so they are naturally pleasing to the eye. A fantastic shot, well worth a place in this month’s shortlist. Congratulations!”
