June 2017 Monthly Theme Contest Submissions

June 2017 Street Photography Contest nominees

Dear Streethunters.net Readers,

The sixth Monthly Theme Contest photos for 2017 have been submitted and we have made our choices. Please keep in mind that the process of choosing a photo from the June 2017 Street Photography Contest Submissions was quite hard!

But let’s take a look at all the photos that were submitted and accepted in this Monthly Theme Contest.

ATTENTION: Photos that didn’t meet the Theme or the Editors criteria were not chosen to be in the shortlist. They have been disqualified or removed. So if your pic isn’t in the shortlist, don’t get discouraged. Try again next month!

At this moment I would like to thank each and every participant for submitting their photograph. We have a great collection of photos with “The Colour Red” to show you! This time we had 30 valid submissions which can all be seen below.

The June 2017 Street Photography Contest Submissions

Here are our favourite 30 29 photos that made it through our strict Editors criteria!

UPDATE: We can only present you with 29 of the photos because one of the contestants requested his image removed.

*All images that were not sent in at the correct size, have been resized. This might affect the quality of entries that were sent in very small sizes.

The June 2017 Street Photography Contest nominees

Every month each one of us Streethunters.net editors picks one photo as a nominee. Here are the photos we chose and the reasons why:

Andrew Sweigart

“When the contest’s theme is a specific colour, it’s easy to get backed into one of two corners. Choosing an image that’s saturated with an abundance of the colour, or selecting a photo that has just a small bit of the colour popping out from the rest of the picture. This red-themed submission hits the sweet spot for myself. There’s three instances of the colour against a mostly white background, and together they form an incredibly strong, unifying thread. There’s the woman in red, obviously heading towards a lavatory, which is marked by the women’s lavatory icons, also in red. And there’s also the red lines on the wall, leading to the lavatory. The clincher is the relationship between the woman and the icon on the wall directly in front of her. Perfect.”

Some street photos really jump out at you from the screen, and that’s exactly what happened when I first laid eyes on this powerful image. The surreal looking cockerel in the right hand vertical third of the frame (nicely positioned around the Golden Ratio point no less) provides a powerful focal point, and of course an amazing splash of red to fit with our theme too. The longer you look at this photo the more you spot; basically there are essentially only three main colours featured in the whole shot: reds – the cockerel’s face and the huge negative space block of the wall which occupies half the frame, white – feathers, the woman’s clothes and hair, the tarpaulin, roofs and walls in the background, and the blue twine and sky – so simple and yet so powerful, all coming together to demonstrate an excellent understanding of the use of colour. And how incredible too that the photographer caught the cockerel mid crow, with the woman facing in the same direction pushing the pram with that fierce look of concentration on her face almost as though she’s steering the cockerel! This is simply a great street photo, and one I’d wish I’d shot myself. Well done!!

“Another tough choice for the Editors! We had more than 100 entries this time round and amongst them some really good photographs. This month I chose this capture. The reason why I like it is because it seems as if the lady in red is missing from the red square metal panel on the right. The shadow by that other person on the right, makes me feel as if there is some sort of a piece of a puzzle missing there, and that the missing piece is the lady if you understand my meaning. The placement of the reds, on either side of the photo balance it nicely and the overall composition and lighting is to my liking. Nice shot!”
