Street Hunt No14 – An off camera flash street photography video tutorial
Introduction
People from all around the world visit Rethymno in Crete during Carnival time. The atmosphere, the people, the buzz and the electricity in the air during Carnival season is invigorating and refreshing, especially for a small town like Rethymno. Carnival is a big thing here and everyone prepares for this day months in advance. Hotels, rooms, suites & villas are over booked and packed with visitors. Groups fly in from the USA, Europe and Asia. There is a real mix of cultures and everyone is happy, excited and ready to party! I am sure that you will get a glimpse of the Rethymno Carnival fever through the Street Hunt #14 video below.
Throughout this Street Hunt I am joined by fellow Street Hunter Digby Fullam and together we start shooting the streets in the early afternoon all the way into the night. This Street Hunt is full of exciting moments, insane situations, annoying rain and surreal characters. We start shooting the parade using natural light but quickly switch to off camera flash due to the lack of good light that is the result of bad, rainy weather. Once we finish covering the parade, we move inside the Old Venetian Town of Rethymno with its narrow alleys and colourful streets and find ourselves following a sea of people splashing into the centre of the town from all directions. Colours, faces, noises, amazing images just unfold themselves in front of us as we get deeper and deeper into the heart of the Rethymno Carnival Party that is everywhere. Our journey takes to different places until at the end we finally get to the beach to witness the end of the celebrations and the huge bonfire that symbolises the conclusion of Carnival 2015.
My Gear
In this Street Hunt video I use my APS-C Fujifilm X-Pro1 with various settings depending on the situation. I start off the Street Hunt wide open with Autofocus and after a while I switch to off camera flash and zone focusing using a narrow aperture. The lens I use in this video is the XF18mm by Fujifilm that is equivalent to 27mm full frame. So it is quite wide, just what I need for taking photographs really close up!
This is a long video, just a little more than 30 minutes, so I recommend you grab a snack and your beverage of choice, sit back and enjoy this month’s Street Hunt filmed in Rethymno, Crete!
In addition to the video I have made a collection of all the photos Digby and myself shot.
