Lonely boy
This is a photograph that has been shot with a Yashica Electro 35 CC with Ilford HP5 400 film, in Rethymno, Crete, Greece.
I remember this evening like it was yesterday. I was in Rethymno in Crete and I was out taking a walk with my two daughters and my wife, enjoying the evening and each other’s company, when we walked past this kid.
I had my Yashica Electro 35 CC hanging around my neck with a roll of Ilford HP5 400 inside it. I had made quite a few shots that night already and I didn’t expect another photograph to “find me” before I got back home, but there it was.
The lonely state of the boy, attracted me like a magnet and before I knew it I was making this photograph. I really believed at the time that this photo would not have got developed, because I shot it at box speed and I thought the light would be inadequate. I hadn’t shot it at 800, so I didn’t push it at all in my studio. But luckily for me, that film in combination with the fast f1.8 Yashinon lens, were plenty for the photo to get captured.
When I released the shutter the sweet click sound of the Yashica quietly echoed in my ears. The boy didn’t know that I shot his photo, my wife and my two girls didn’t notice me either.
It was a good night for me then.
